The Junior League of St. Petersburg puts on a Back to School Care Fair each year so that children can get free vaccinations, eye exams, physicals, etc. One year, one of our PCDHA RDHs (Registered Dental Hygienists) asked if we could include dental screenings. What a good idea! I've volunteered every year since. This year we were able to give fluoride treatments to the kids.
It's a good way to be able to do service, hang out with other RDHs and students, see cute little kids, and we even get continuing education credit for it! (And free breakfast and lunch!) It's such a good group of people. Some volunteers had already left at this point.
We had a DDS there too, even though we didn't need one for the screanings, patient education, and fluoride treatments. This was our student table. We probably should have had something about SPC there, but we did have a PCDHA representative at the education tables, and they are student PCDHA members. I don't get to see the students much, so it's good to have activities throughout the year so they can be involved. I really loved the service opportunities that were offered to me as an RDH student. Maybe that's why I'm still so active:)
